Everyone at SLV is familiar with Julie Haff and her position as superintendent, but few students know what a superintendent does. A superintendent is hired directly by the school board to serve as the chief executive officer of the school board, and be an educational advisor to the board on matters such as the budget, curriculum, and facility. Julie Haff has been our superintendent for 12 years, but she is now retiring, compelling the school board to elect a new representative to fill her shoes.
Luckily, they have found someone who they believe is perfect for the job! Laurie Bruton used to be the Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources at Whittier City school district, 13 miles east of Los Angeles, and soon she will be moving to the San Lorenzo Valley to take the position of Superintendent. Bruton was carefully selected, from an applicant pool of 20 candidates by the school board; she was selected as the school’s preference as she really stood, demonstrating strong skills as a leader and educator.
Whittier City District seems to be the polar opposite of the San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District. Whittier is a K-8 district with nine elementary schools and two middle schools– for a grand total of 6,600 students! Comparatively, SLV has only two elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school, for a grand total of 2,233 students. This difference is surprising, considering our school recently hired Ms. Van Putten as principal, who also worked at a very large school in Fremont. Some think that SLV’s small community is too different from her background, and that it will be hard to apply the same techniques; Nevertheless, Bruton has stated that she worked in the Bear Valley District before Whittier, a small mountain community in Southern California that is quite similar to SLV, so she does have experience with communities such as ours.
With the changes coming about, Julie Haff will be missed by this district, and the Claw wishes her a happy retirement. To our new superintendent Laurie Bruton, we say Welcome! SLV is a great district, and we hope you enjoy the natural beauty of our town and the friendliness of its inhabitants!
