SLVUSD plans on letting freshmen high school students return to classes in person on April 20th, and the sophomores, juniors, and seniors return on April 27th. However the plan is much more complicated than simply that.
All students will take part Tuesday through Friday in the morning online distance learning classes from 8:30 a.m. to 11:40 a.m. One group of students (the “A” cohort) would return in person to Tuesday and Wednesday’s 1-3-5 classes and 2-4-6 classes after completing those classes online that morning. The other group of students (“B” cohort) would return in person to Thursday and Friday’s 1-3-5 classes and 2-4-6 classes after completing those classes online that morning. These in-person classes would take place from 12:55 p.m. to 3:35 p.m. The cohorts will be arranged alphabetically, so kids from the same family can come on the same day.
Including finals, freshmen will spend 7 weeks at SLVHS doing in-person instruction twice per week. Sophomores, juniors and seniors will get 6 weeks of in-person instruction.
John Frederick, a freshman at SLVHS, believes that “Online schooling is horrid, which is why I find the hybrid idea to be the best solution. It appears to be somewhat safe, or at least safer than returning fully, and I will most definitely be participating.” Frederick asserted that he felt that being in person was going to be a much better education.
Contrast to Frederick’s belief on the same matter, Joaquin Cruz, a junior at SLVHS, had this to say, “I think it’s stupid and useless. Not only is it going to affect teachers with planning, times/scheduling, vaccine stress, COVID restrictions, groups, etc. but it’s too much work for a measly month of school. It’s best to wait for the fall. And beyond that we may start seeing some states begin going back to normal, and it would be much safer at that time. I don’t want to see my community continue to be affected by this. I am highly against going back,” Cruz asserts that not only is the workload and stress on students going to rise, but said things for teachers will rise as well.
The “return-to-school” plan will be in effect for about 6-7 weeks The short amount of time here doesn’t seem to be an issue for people who are excited to go back and people who definitely don’t want to go back alike.
