During this holiday season, with Thanksgiving coming around the corner and Christmas shortly after, here are some movies to watch on the nights of celebration on these fun next few holidays.
Starting with our up and coming holiday Thanksgiving, two movies to sit down and watch after celebrating the holiday are the classic Charlie Brown’s Thanksgiving and the more recent movie Free Birds.
Charlie Brown’s Thanksgiving, starring the loveable characters, Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Sally, Linus, Peppermint Patty, Marcie, and Franklin, is an adorable film about Charlie Brown and his challenge to throw a Thanksgiving party for his friends as well as attending the party at his grandmother’s house. Meanwhile, Free Birds was released in 2013 and is about a pair of time-traveling turkeys who go back to the first Thanksgiving to change the traditional feast menu so that the turkeys won’t be eaten.
For many individuals’ favorite Holiday, Christmas, some movies to watch would be A Christmas Story and The Grinch. The classic 1983 movie A Christmas Story follows a young boy named Ralphie and his desire for a Red Ryder BB gun that his parents are hesitant to get for him. The film brings you along through his life in the few days surrounding Christmas in the form of many small vignettes.
The popular Christmas movie The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, originally brought to life by Dr. Suess, follows the story of a green creature living above and hating this village of Whos down in Whoville and their Christmas traditions. He goes to great lengths to get rid of Christmas and eventually learns that Christmas is not just about gifts and new things, it is about giving joy and love as well as presents.
Regarding past holidays, two movies to watch for Halloween are The Nightmare Before Christmas and the Ghostbusters. The classic 1993 Tim Burton film The Nightmare Before Christmas is about the character Jack Skellington and his finding of a portal to “Christmas Town”. Jack then kidnaps Santa Claus and attempts to deliver Halloween toys to the kids in Christmas land, terrifying them. He then realizes that he is no good at being Santa Claus. Jack Skellington returns to his life as king of “Halloween Town” and releases Santa back into his own world.
The Ghostbusters movie filmed in 1984, starring Bill Murray and Dan Akroyd follows a small ghost fighting business who fights against the ghosts and paranormal threats in New York City. Ghostbusters was most recognized for its mix of horror, comedy, and action. As well as the original 1984 version of the film, the 2016 remake starred Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Chris Hemsworth. With the same idea, a small team of individuals traveling through time and space to fight supernatural forces, it is a well-known horror/comedy movie that is perfectly fit for a Halloween movie night.
With some family’s holiday traditions being their time spent sitting together in front of a TV watching these new and classic films, there are plenty of Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas themed movies to watch with one another. Charlie Browns Thanksgiving, Free Birds, A Christmas Story, The Grinch, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and The Ghostbusters are all great picks for a holiday movie night.
