It’s finally October! The month of screams, scares, Pumpkin Spice Lattes and Among Us cosplays. The perfect time for a horror movie binge! Start a video call with friends and get ready to jump. Here are the top five creepiest and crawliest horror movies that will leave you checking under your bed at night.
Midsommar is a relatively new movie directed by Ari Aster. It came out last year and has an 83% Rotten Tomato rating. Midsommar follows a young girl who’s gone through a tragedy on a vacation in Sweden. Her and her deadbeat boyfriend’s friends go celebrate midsummer and discover that the people there have odd traditions, and are sucked into their world. While it leans on the more psychological horror side of things, it’s definitely up there in disturbing, and will leave you shaking.
Next up we have number two, which is The Babadook directed by Jennifer Kent. It came out in 2014 and has a 98% Rotten Tomato rating. A single mother, still shaken by the violent death of her husband, battles with her son’s fear of a monster lurking in the house, but soon discovers a sinister presence all around her. The jump scares are a cause for commotion, and help define this movie.
Coming up behind we have number three, The Quiet Place directed by John Krasinski. It was released in 2018 and has a 96% on rotten tomatoes. A family must live in silence to avoid mysterious creatures that hunt by sound. Knowing that even the slightest whisper or footstep can bring death. The creatures lurk, and the family only survives because they all already know sign language. This movie stands out due to its extreme suspense. Constant quiet waiting for the monster to pop out.
Moving on, number four, The Sixth Sense, directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Older than the other films on this list, it was released in 1999 and ended up receiving a Rotten Tomato rating of 86%. A young Cole Sear can see ghosts, and they visit him with their unresolved problems. This boot shaker of a movie follows a terrified Cole and his therapist as they reveal the horrifying truth of Cole’s ailment.
Last but not least, Hereditary. Directed by the same person who directed Midsommar, Hereditary came out in 2018 and fans have said it “makes you paranoid for days.” A mom and her kids slowly unravel disturbing and paranormal secrets after their grandmother dies. Definitely deserving of this list.
