The Follow up Movie to ‘Suicide Squad’, ‘Birds of Prey’ Hits Theaters

It’s that time of the year… it’s March, in between winter and summer and it feels like life is on repeat. Every day, we go to school, do whatever else everyone individually does, and go home. It’s inevitable that it’s that time of the year again because the holidays have passed and we are now waiting for summer. There are not many exciting things to do at this time, but movies are always a good idea!

There is a new movie called, Birds Of Prey and it was released on February 7, 2020. The movie was written by Christina Hodson, directed by Cathy Yan, and produced by Margot Robbie. It has, so far, made 97.1 million dollars, so it seems to be quite successful. It is the follow up to the Suicide Squad movie in 2016, starring Harley Quinn. Birds of Prey turned out to be the fourth highest-grossing film of 2020. The film received praise from critics for its visual style.

The movie is based on Harley Quinn after her messy break up with the Joker puts a big target on her back. She is then on the run but very unprotected. She has to face the wrath of a narcissistic crime boss named Black Mask and his partner Victor Zsasz and many other “thugs” in the city. Things eventually even out for Harley Quinn when she unexpectedly partners with three deadly women named Huntress, Black Canary, and Renee Montoya. Many erratic things happen next but you will have to watch and find out for yourself.

Although Birds Of Prey has a 3.7 out of 5 rating, many people had different opinions on the movie. I watched it myself and personally thought it was interesting and entertaining. Even though it was not necessarily my favorite type of movie, it didn’t bore me. I stayed intrigued and liked the storyline. I did not see the first movie in 2016 so I was a little bit confused and I could not say which movie was better. The only criticism I would give Birds of Prey is the excessive violence, but again, that is just a personal preference.

Some students gave me their opinion on the movie. A sophomore male said, “The movie, Birds Of Prey was really entertaining and I liked it a lot but not as much as Suicide Squad. The first movie was honestly better and more action-packed but they were both good in general. Birds Of Prey was mainly focused on Harley Quinn so if you weren’t interested in her then it wouldn’t be the movie for you. I liked all the violence and chaos. It made it fun to watch and not boring.”

A sophomore female has a different opinion on the movie, a more negative one, and they said,  “To be completely honest, I didn’t really like the movie Birds Of Prey that much. I went to watch it with my friends because it was what they wanted to watch and I didn’t want to argue about it, but it really wasn’t my type of movie. It was entertaining, yes. It was not boring or anything, but I just do not really like watching violence and the storyline didn’t keep me wanting to keep watching. Although I didn’t really like the movie, my friends that I went to see it with liked it so it might have just been me.”

It seems that the movie, Birds Of Prey is for sure entertaining and many people enjoyed watching it, despite all of their opinions on the movie as a whole. It is a good way to be entertained during this time of the year and a fun way to  spend time with your friends and family.
