The powerful message, disappointing acts, and heartfelt reunions of the VMAs

Shining lights, A-list celebrities, and blasting music were all a part of The 2017 MTV Video Music Awards that were held on August 27 at The Forum in Inglewood, California, honoring music videos released between June 25, 2016, and June 23, 2017. It was hosted by Katy Perry.

Logic brought his powerful message of suicide prevention to the MTV Video Music Awards stage on Sunday night. The rapper performed his emotional song 1-800-273-8255 with help from Alessia Cara and Khalid, who are also featured on the track. Towards the end of the passionate performance, which included a stage full of people in ¨YOU ARE NOT ALONE¨ and ¨1-800-273-8255¨ t-shirts, Logic spoke up about the heavy themes of his track titled with the number of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. When asked about the performance Jessica WIlliams stated ¨I thought that Logic´s performance was really empowering because our society does not really talk about suicide and depression as often as it maybe should.¨

Katy Perry closed out the VMAs with a performance of her summer hit “Swish Swish” alongside collaborator Nicki Minaj in a basketball-themed production. The song, identified by fans as a supposed diss track against musical nemesis Taylor Swift, did not quite spark the retaliatory tone that viewers may have expected following Swift’s debut of her “Look What You Made Me Do” music video earlier in the night. It did, however, feature Perry flying high over the audience, an auditorium-full of bouncing basketball balloons and a literal slam dunk finish. Tasina Westberg thought the the performance was ¨odd¨ and ¨not good enough to be performed at the VMAs¨

One of the most memorable moments during the show was the long awaited reunion between former Drake and Josh actors, Josh Peck and Drake Bell. The two hugged it out, after going through a rough patch when Peck reportedly did not invite Bell to his wedding earlier that year, causing Bell to take his feelings of betrayal to twitter. The two had been inseparable for years since the end of Drake and Josh in 2007. Fans were excited to see the two exchange a hug during the show this year, hopefully indicating all hard feelings are gone. “Peck and I are closer than we’ve been in a while” says Bell. It’s a great sign for fans to see their childhood favorites on good terms.

To conclude, this year’s VMAS had its spectacular moments, while also having its fails. But year after year the MTV VMA show did not disappoint. We look forward to seeing what 2018 music has in store for the coming year.
