What to consider before taking rigorous AP classes

The AP label can be somewhat foreboding to those who haven’t taken the  challenging classes before, but there a number of ways to cope and be prepared to take on the workload and exams.

AP classes expect more from students than the average classes, but just because the expectations are higher does not mean that students should be fearful and not take them.

AP classes are a way for students to be better prepared for higher education, and they give a chance for students to go beyond the basic college classes and get into more challenging and engaging courses when they arrive for their freshman year. They can also help students save money on the classes that they no longer have to take. Senior Robert Adams said that “AP means that you should be prepared at all times, which can help later in college and in later in life”.

There are a number of ways in order to cope with AP classes, and it is best to have some sort of knowledge of each specific class before taking a class.

First, know what your strengths and weaknesses are. If you are confident in taking a more challenging class and you have the academic evidence to support that, then you should take the class. However, if you aren’t necessarily invested in your work, then maybe you should reconsider. AP classes are challenging courses that are not something to take lightly.

Another thing to consider is your schedule. Outside of academics, you may have sports or other extracurricular activities that may take up time, whcih is something to consider. Junior Theresa Panelli said, “You need to accommodate other parts of your life to try and survive a year with AP’s”. These other activities may take up a lot of your time, so it is necessary to manage your time between homework and extra after school activities.

Along with the AP classes, regular classes may still put up a challenge, and they are no means less important. One cannot neglect their so-called “easier” classes simply because they are taking some harder classes. You have to learn how to have good time organization and a strong work ethic.

Lastly, one should think ahead to how AP classes can help you in the future. AP classes can both prepare you for college, as well as helping you advance more quickly through classes and prerequisites. The work done in AP classes is akin to how research and work is done at the higher level of education, so take note and apply these later in your academic career.

AP classes are always a choice. There a number of reasons why one should and can take an AP class, but it is always an option. The AP classes are there to challenge you and help you to be skip certain college classes.

To those thinking of taking the classes, good luck and don’t worry too much. Your success will all depend on what you want to do with your academic future, and how much time and effort you put into your classes.
