Thanksgiving is a great holiday where families can come together, but many of us also look forward to what comes the next day, Black Friday. For many decades, millions of people come out of their homes to get great deals on everything from electronics to clothing. Stereotypically, we think of being packed in stores like sardines but if you take a few precautions, you will be sure to find everything you need, in a safe way!
- Getting there early will ensure shorter lines and better items at a better price. It’s a win-win to get up a few hours early and you will be rewarded.
- Make a list of things you would like to get, and do your research as to what storeswill be selling your desired items. Comparing prices will make sure you aregetting the best for your money.
- Look in the newspaper the weekend before for lots of ads. These ads will tell youwhen the store opens and what sales they are having.Downtown Santa Cruz has a lot of great stores that hold Black Friday sales.
Urban Outfitters in Downtown usually marks down many of their items up to 50% on Black Friday. Forever 21 also has great sales, including free gifts and markdowns. If you are looking for electronics, now is the time to buy, Best Buy in Capitola has a lot of markdowns, but be sure to get there early, because electronics go fast on Black Friday.
Most of all, be sure to be safe while you are shopping. As much as we like to ignore it, many tragedies have occurred in stores during Black Friday sales. In 2008 alone, 2,000 people trampled a young WalMart employee, while across the country, two people were fatally shot during an argument in ToysRUs. Although these deaths are rare, and most likely won’t happen in a smaller city like Santa Cruz, always avoid large crowds of people, and be patient with others. If anyone shows signs of aggression, just walk away.
If you don’t want to get up early or fight the crowds, another option for Black Friday is shopping online. Most stores have websites with sales, so if you prefer a calm day sleeping in and eat some Thanksgiving leftovers, then online shopping is probably a better option for you. One student spoke of her Black Friday experiences, “I felt like a sardine”, a cramped or claustrophobic feeling in crowded stores is common, so shopping in the comfort of your own home can be a luxury for some.
Black Friday can be a fun shopping experience if you follow these simple tips. It is one of the few times in the year that virtually every store has a markdown, so if you have been wanting something that is out of your budget, look around on Black Friday, and you will surely find a great deal!
